Non-Player Characters and Quests
Marshal McBride is an example of a Non-Player Character, or
"NPC" for short. As their name suggests, NPCs are characters that are
controlled by the game itself. NPCs serve a wide variety of roles in WoW: they include Vendors
that sell a wide variety of items and equipment, Class Trainers that help you customize your Character's abilities, Guard NPCs that defend capital cities and settlements against
players from the opposing Faction, Enemy NPCs that serve as your
computer-controlled adversaries in the wider world, and so on.
Marshal McBride belongs to a class of NPCs that is arguably the most pivotal in the game: Quest Givers. They are the NPCs from which you'll obtain Quests--adventuring tasks that can be simple or complex, and which allow you to level up your Character and progress through WoW's many storylines. Quest Giver NPCs can be easily identified by the large exclamation points that appear above their heads, as well as by the fact that their names are always visible. In addition to Quest Giver NPCs, you can obtain Quests from objects in the game environment like "wanted" posters, or even from loot items that you retrieve from containers or from enemies that you've killed.
Whenever you're ready, interact with Marshal McBride by holding your mouse pointer over him (the pointer will turn from a hand to an exclamation point) and clicking the Right mouse button.
